Worst check in experience ever
I don't post negative reviews on Booking.com , Trip Advisor or Google .Quite the opposite, sharing accounts of good service and value . But I lodged a complaint via Booking. Com who forwarded to the property but there was no response let alone an apology .So here's account of the worst check in have ever experienced.
The Woman in reception was so officous . I thought it was supposed to be hospitality . Was like trying to enter a hostile country . Despite the booking having already being for paid via the ever efficient Booking. Com, she asked for "identification "and quote .."a physical credit card "
She had no interest in my booking.com confirmation number or proof of payment via my phone app.
I gave her my Australian passport as the ultimate identification. She glanced at it and the asked me if i was an Australian citizen
i am almost 80 and migrated to Australia in 1969 and am a proud Australian Citizen. And of what relevance or business of hers .
After rejecting my passport, she then asked if i had a driving licence . Many people of my age are no longer driving and although I am still licensed I am the passenger and have no reason to cary a driving licence or indeed any photo identification . Medicare and other vital cards for the aged do not carry photographs. I did recall a photo of my licence among the photograghs on my phone which after some time I manage to locate It was all so unnerving having my passport rejected and questioning my right to have one . I was attempting to get my prepaid room in a motel not enter a foreign country
My companion had started to complete the checkin form requested and was questioned as to whether the addeess she had filled in was the same as the photogragh of the licence .
In regard to the need for a physical credit card i told her i no longer carry one as i pay on line as i had done for this booking via a secure third party wirh data proection protocols or tap my phone . She was totally unhelpfull
My companion who also relies on digital technology as i observe in the majority of cases at the supermarket went outside the vehicle to find if she had a physical credit card in her bags. Note she was not a party to the booking which was in fact paid Meanwhile the woman in reception kept saying Booking.com dont provide the credit card details or home address.to the motel . The motel had been paid . I have used Booking.com many times in a number of countries I have never had a checkin so unpleasant. Had my companion not gone the vehicle and produced hers ..note not in the name or details of the booking I beleive I would not have been given the keys to the room i had already paid for . Final irony motel policy states they provide express check in also that they will not accept cash for a booking.
Lest you assume the justification for demanding not just ohoto identification but my home address details and a physical credit card in relation to a prepaid room is about the risk of somebody drinking all the champagne and eating the chocolates from the minibar . This is a basic motel room with a $7 toaster , a $40 microwave and a cheap brand television on the wall the size of a laptop screen. The only hint of upmarket are the rates for such a room on a highway in small
Surely it not just an elderly person who would be distressed by this but what assurances are there about the use and security of this crucial personal information . Home address of the traveller means a house is logically unoccupied and vunerable . What about my rights and other traveller's.. a room was booked and paid in advance by a secure third party site trusted with the required data . What is to be done with my personal data which was demanded in such an authoritarian manner .
.The woman most ungraciously finally handed over key to the room . At this stage I was very distressed . Frankly I would have preferred to leave the motel get my money and find somewhere else anywhere to stay .
I was longer in a state to proceed with the evening meal planned at a local hotel and soup was purchased at a local supermarket to microwave and simply go to bed . I found on the microwave
a sign to say crockery and cutlery were inside the microwave . Crockery was indeed all stacked in there meaning had to be removed and stacked elsewhere to use microwave but there was no cutlery there . It was found later on a shelf without a light above it wrapped in paper bag under paper napkins . I took my soup to bed and found that Bedside lamps with inbuilt switches didnt seem to work but for some reason had been rurned off at the wall. .But the old fashioned clock radio was plugged into an inaccessible power point behind the bed and flashed the whole time and had to be covered . Went to have shower and there was no exhaust fan in bathroom.
I was glad to leave early morning having been awake all night unable to stop thinking about what seemed illogical petty tyranny I did not carry nor should I need to carry a physical credit card or photo identification other than a passport to access a basic prepaid motel room . Worst customer service experience. For me absolute waste of money
