Thank you for your review. We’re happy to hear that you enjoyed a comfortable stay, clean room, spacious bathroom, and the wellness facilities, including the large pool. However, we are sorry that your experience was marred by the reception service and the disorganized interior. We will certainly look into improving these areas. Regarding the restaurant service, we apologize for the misunderstanding about the breakfast. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve. We hope you’ll consider staying with us again and give us the opportunity to provide a better experience.

Great experience!
The staff was nice and helpful, the food was great and SPA just awesome. We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to any guest.
The only thing we would change, are the lights in our room, which were really dim, and therefore our room was quite dark.
Thank you!

1 circle only because you can't give minus circles
Location is great, beautiful part of the Tatras. Spa facilities were cute and clean - albeit small, if we hadn't had them to ourselves when we happened to visit, it would have been uncomfortable. Quite liked the old fashioned, wooden style of the place and the reception water feature.
Now onto the bad...
The features and fittings are quite dated, along with some of the staff's attitudes (more on that later).
There were no teas and coffee facilities in the room - which is a standard feature of a 4-star hotel and, while small, something we quite missed first thing in the morning. Also, the provided robes and towels were old, thin and threadbare. One robe was ripped down the seams, the other had no loop holes for the tie. Again, small points but eventually adds up to a very lackluster feel for the overall high price.
The mattresses were old, sprung models that felt well worn. The bath/shower arrangement was silly - a tiny bath too small to sit in, and a tiny showerhead plus half screen which made it impossible not the soak the rest of the room if showering, but the water pressure was decent though.
We were given a coupon for 2 'complimentary' arrival drinks in the bar, but never had the opportunity to redeem this as it was closed for the first (and only...) 3 days of our booked 6 night stay.
Upon arrival, having a half board package, we went to dinner first.
The arrangement was chaotic for the two evening meals we had there.
Disinterested or confused staff, no drinks menu provided. Set 4-course meals - a laughable 'amuse bouche' (guacamole on a piece of bread), horrible, watery soups made from leftovers, main courses which were style over substance and lacked flavour. Desserts were the star of the show, even though we don't have much of a sweet tooth, but the pastry chef seems to be a wasted talent (unless it was bought in). At other tables mains were appearing before soups and being sent back again...
On the second night walking into the restaurant we were greeted by a large stack of dirty laundry, right in the entrance way, making us think that they were not open initially. Upon pointing this out to the hapless waiter, he just laughed about it.
Breakfast was no better.
We arrived only a little after opening to find no coffee, no juice, cloudy water and unlabelled, unidentifiable buffet items next to the cheapest quality hams and cheeses available and a poor selection of partly stale bread.
Upon waiting for 15 mins to see if we were just a bit early, and still no coffee appearing and no one asking us, the waiter nearly bit our heads off when we enquired, and stropped "well I can make you a coffee!" (Which was, in fairness, quite tasty in the end).
Hot food items were limited and poor quality - we had laughed at another review before that mentioned this, but found the eggs were incredibly under seasoned.
The second day we tried to arrive half an hour later in case we had just been a bit enthusiastic but found everything in a worse state. There was less of everything and all had the impression of just being left over from the previous day; less bread, less hot food, no scrambled eggs, the same budget brand sliced meats uncovered and festering. The labels for the foods still hadn't appeared, and didn't until we were leaving - although there was a big pot of grainy coffee.
After our second breakfast here, the real fun began...
We had booked a 6 night stay, but felt unsafe to stay any longer than 3, so cut our losses and left.
It should also be mentioned that, given we had 2 meals a day booked, we did not eat anything anywhere else in the Tatras during our stay.
We started feeling unwell around midday on our 3rd day, having only taken a small after breakfast walk around Štrbské pleso - and we were very glad not to have gone back out yet. By 1pm one end of me had started to evacuate, and it wasn't long before the other followed. This caught up to my significant other a short while later.
Trying to spare too many gory details, we were taking turns making full use of the bathroom facilities all afternoon and night, running out of toilet paper (and will to live) at some point in the small hours.
We can't think of anything other than food poisoning which can rip through a person like that... Which the hotel later vehemently denied.
Having decided in between bathroom runs that we couldn't risk eating here anymore, we were fully packed and ready to take our chances on the road by 8am. having waited 2 hours to finally speak to the manager (she's on her way... She's in a meeting...) an apology was offered but they stated there was no way it could be the hotel as all staff were fine and no other incidents had been reported. We were expecting to be grateful for the 'little present' of a bottle of wine (which we declined) and of course a refusal of any kind of refund despite the horrific overall experience and shortened stay.
In summary; I think this could be a good hotel if managed properly, but no one seems to care, and the price tag is just a given because you are in a beautiful setting (which in itself is actually rather over-populated by tourists in peak season...there is literally toilet roll under every bush).
This can't really be rated as a 4-star hotel and must surely just be what they named the place.
You're a captive audience and will pay whatever the begrudging locals tell you - so 3 nights, 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners with a round of poisoning will set you back 777 Euros.

Number one choice in the region
We come back to this hotel almost every year since 2012, choosing it for both our summer and winter vacation in Tatra Mountains. Having experienced staying at Kempinski and Patria on multiple occasions, I still prefer Borovica despite a couple of shortcomings.
The most obvious one is its distance from Strbske pleso, which is not that much of a problem during the day, but since taking a walk around the lake in the late evening, with lamps lit up, is so beautiful, you are making a compromise. Once you had your delicious dinner at Borovica, you would probably think twice about dragging your full belly up the road for that hint of romantic.
Especially if you have little children.
There are rooms at Borovica from which you get a very nice view at the mountains, but if you are accommodated on the other side of the hotel, you have to make do with pine trees at best. In this respect, both Kempinski and Patria do have the upper hand. As they do in offering parking space in a garage, extra paid but very handy in winter time.
Being slightly hidden, Borovica’s location scores in calmness. The hotel is considerably smaller than its counterparts at Strbske pleso, which also means it is cosier in almost every aspect. Rooms are quite nice and very well equipped. Bathrooms offer ample space and quality cosmetics. Being a four-star hotel, it is not fair to compare it with the Grand Hotel Kempinski, but personally I hardly sense any difference in comfort between the two, notwithstanding Kempinski’s superior location.
I am convinced that you will be very satisfied with the dinner service, the menu always offers three choices and I can’t remember a time I would have any complaint about a meal. In the summer, you get to enjoy some courses prepared on a charcoal grill. During the day, the a la carte menu is absolutely perfect, though we rather tend to grab something for lunch on the hikes or in the chalet at Strbske pleso. As for breakfast, the buffet selection helps with a pleasant start for the day. The restaurant and other hotel staff have always been very kind and professional, which can’t/couldn’t be said about every other hotel mentioned here, unfortunately.
You can also indulge in tobacco and brandy savouring in the splendid cigar lounge designed in the typical English style. In winter, a wood crackling in the fireplace enhances the atmosphere. The lobby bar offers a great selection of drinks as well, and a few years ago it was extended to the exterior in the form of a couple of tables, which is highly convenient.
The wellness is a strong asset. The pool area offers a beautiful view of the neighbouring pine woods, and I just love to have a swim and then read the magazines while resting on a lounge chair and soaking up the beauty of the surrounding nature. The selection of saunas is excellent, complemented by a hammam. You can also have a jacuzzi on the rooftop prepared for you and observe the mountain peaks from within, regardless of year season. I particularly like the fact that there are rarely more than just a couple of hotel guests in the wellness at the same time. Very often you may have the entire wellness area for yourself, if you choose time outside of typical peak hours.
The hotel also offers a variety of spa and cosmetic procedures, so you know where to look for your better-half when she is not around. We have had a pleasure of meeting many remarkable therapists over the years here, very skilful and incredibly kind. The spa rooms are very nice too. My favourite is the cigar lounge.
If the weather does not allow for any activity outside, the fitness studio offers you a possibility to toil yourself in every position imaginable. The equipment is of high quality and the room has an outside view, and it is just a few steps away from the showers and the pool. There is even an artificial climbing wall of considerable height on the hotel’s south facade ready for you, and the hotel provides an experienced instructor for supervision. During the ski season, you can rely on hotel's excellent shuttle service driving you to and from the ski areal.
The shortcoming considering the distance of Strbske pleso is probably the only true weak point of this hotel. Although I know it is only my own laziness that prohibits me from taking those wonderful summer evening walks around the lake after dinner. But let’s not put that on the record. Otherwise I am having a hard time to think of something else. Hmm, yes, the wording on the lift’s wall designating the amenities on each particular floor could get a renovation, since some letters were missing. And hopefully some day soon there will be digital bracelet keys introduced, so that you do not have to think of a key card when going to the wellness.
This summer (2020) we were not able to get a room at Borovica, since we decided for a trip to Tatras at the last minute and all had already been booked out. Staying at another hotel, in a very nice suite with a magnificent lake view, we only got reassured that Borovica stays our first choice in the region.
