We liked the large rooms and bathroom. The air conditioning was quiet. We had delicious dinner at the restaurant downstairs. The castle is 5 minutes walking distance and there are many restaurants and stores nearby. We walked from the train station to the hotel. The staff were very friendly.

Visited Cardiff for a 50th birthday party so wanted a bed for the night. Everything was OK until at 7am two loud (possibly drunk) men barged into our room, singing and shouting. When they saw us in bed they said “Oh, we thought this was our room, Reception gave us this number”. They left rapidly and left our door open until I shouted for them to shut it. Left us both shaken and spoilt an otherwise lovely weekend. On departure we reported this to Reception and the Receptionist refunded us our breakfast charge. Rather disappointed.

Location is pretty good, walking distance to cardiff castle, bus and train central stations.
Amenities are basic - what you would expect at this level and the breakfast was 6.5/10 - could have been better in terms of options as well as service provided.

Unfortunate decline….

We’ve traveled to Cardiff from the States for 20 + years. We love to train from Paddington to Cardiff Central and stroll to HI along the river/stadium walk.
Our first visit was superb, and I complimented the Manager ( who could be Martin Clunes twin!!!) in the presence of his Regional Supervisor. He was superb, staff was superb, and the hotel was extremely well kept and comfortable. The restaurant/breakfast was second to none!
Unfortunately, in the succeeding years, the standards have fallen exponentially: the room was shabby and in need of repair, the furnishings were old and dilapidated, there was a noticeable absence of basic amenities and expected appliances (safe, refrigerator, etc), and the restaurant offerings have not lived up to past expectations.
We also believe that we are consistently relegated to Second- or Third-rate accommodations, why we cannot say…
The staff who recognized us were very friendly and welcoming, both at Reception and in the Restaurant. Upon check in however, the lady who served us (blonde and I believe Eastern European perhaps?) was forbidding and downright rude and disrespectful to my spouse.
We are very disappointed and rather saddened by the loss of standards at a hostelry that has been a haven in our annual travels.
We hope that HI and its corporate parent will rectify this deplorable situation.
