Connect with Nature
You’ll only have a fan which was fine for our stay in December.
We arrived at night which was completely dark. You’ll have to use your phone to see the tire footing to guide you up a hill to your stay. I did feel a little claustrophobic. The dome has two small shutter windows on each side which will give you the experience of in stereo Coquis. You’ll also feel in nature with the bamboo hand painted walls.
If you’re looking to do a full on beauty night this is not the place for you. Water is a cold sprinkle.
If you continue up on the tier footing behind the dome you’ll find a flat surface where you can do yoga. Also a hiking trail. Over all a great place to do some deep meditation and connect with yourself.
Be aware of your footing there are loose cats, dogs, hens, and turkeys living their best life around the grounds.
30 ish mins away from SJU airport and
20 min away from El Yunque.

Rustic hippie place w spectacular views of a blanket of rainforest
There are too many annoying cats, they are not shy to get attention from you, also try to come into the room. Although none were aggressive at all. The dog is completely lovely.
The manager Jyl is off beat. Fully professional and helpful w questions before or during my trip. Friendly but not warm. When I met her, I thought she was a guest; I dont think she routinely welcomes and sees guests off. She was in and around when I was leaving but didnt say bye. She’s not a typical host, not a bad thing.
I think the conditions of the road in the area change rapidly - pot holes form quickly. The bottom of the drive was repaired but 5 m from the gate, it was super bad. Its about a 25 min drive to the visitor centre, 35 min to the forest entrance (that may be my slow narrow mountain roads driving!). 30 mins to San Juan and 45 mins to Ceiba. Theres a Ralph’s 15 mins away. Recommend taking own water and groceries. It rains a lot, and once the road was flooded so I couldnt get to Ralphs, prob could’ve gone a longer way though ie dont think I was trapped.
This place is a cross between a hostel, hotel and air bnb. Very rustic. You have access to a fridge, dont think a kitchen, toiletries are included, your room wont be made up, you can get free coffee but need to pay for water. Its a formal or informal cat refuge, Jyl v kindly takes them in when theyre unwanted. Plus a family home with kids (not noisy). So I think if you stay here, you have to be able to respect or at least ‘tolerate’ that.
The unbeatable thing about this place is the view of a blanket of rainforest, plus you feel like youre in the middle of it. It is stunning. The noises are superb, esp at night. And it has one of the best places for meditation/yoga.

Forest Retreat
The beds were comfortable and the place was clean but a bit musty from the high humidity. Fans and an in room dehumidifier/air conditioner kept us comfortable. Lots of pleasant night sounds from frogs and crickets.
I was trying to recover from a bad upper respiratory bug when we were there and the host Jill was kind enough to get me a herbal tea that I think was helpful.
There are lots chickens, roosters, cats and even a turkey roaming the grounds. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper!

Enjoyed the stay despite double-booking & dubious substitution
La Casa de Vida Natural is located on the slope of Sierra de Luquillo mountain range, right next to the El Yunque National Forest, and 10 min drive from the town of Río Grande. From there, you get a majestic view of the valley, the coast, and a bit of El Yunque. Wake up early to catch a gorgeous sunrise over the mountains!
The manager Jyl is assisted by Eunice, homestay guests, neighbors, and the place gives off a bit of a hippie commune vibe. If you enjoy rustic and eco-friendly lodging, LCDVN is for you. They have chickens and ducks coexisting with at least half a dozen cats and a friendly Rottador guard dog. The common area is a great place to mingle and bond with fellow travelers. We loved dining outside with a great view of the yard, but be ready to protect your food from cats who love to jump on the table. We learned it’s best to dine after cats are fed. The property is pretty vast and even if the ground is wet, you can go for long strolls using numerous stepping stones.
We arrived at LCDVN just before sunset on Wednesday and paid cash for the Lychee room (listed as “Deluxe Double Room with Balcony” on Booking.com). After Jyl went to check on her laptop, she returned our money and said the room was double-booked. She said they can offer us a smaller and humbler room with a big discount or we can leave at no charge. Jyl couldn’t explain how the double booking occurred, but recommended not using Booking (she called it semi-problematic) and sticking to Airbnb and Vrbo. In any case, we would recommend calling them directly and double-checking your booking.
Our original 2-night booking of Lychee cost almost $200 ($90 per night plus tax) and we were offered the Blueberry room for $100. We trusted Jyl and took it, since it was late in the day and we didn’t have anywhere to go. We later learned that Blueberry is listed on Airbnb at $35 per night; needless to say, we felt cheated, since it didn’t feel like an actual discount.
Blueberry room is located in the main guesthouse. You have to go through the kitchen, living room, and a small corridor to get there. The corridor also leads to two other rooms. Blueberry and the room across from it both have openings above the door, so you can hear the other guests very well. Even though the quiet hours are 10pm to 7am, the folks in the opposite room were talking loudly late at night, so we had to knock on their door and ask them to keep it down both nights. You also have roosters that will crow before sunrise, so you might want to get earplugs if you want to get a good night's sleep. On the last night, Jyl offered to move us to a domed home away from the main guesthouse, but it was already dark, so we declined and stayed in Blueberry.
Despite the disappointment with our 2-month-old reservation not being honored and a dubious substitute room with noisy neighbors, by and large, we enjoyed our stay in La Casa and would recommend it to folks who could learn from our experience.
