A homeless person harrassed guests in the breakfast area until a guest took matters in his own hands
Location is ok--really near a Target and Mall. I think, for driving to Las Vegas, would have been better if it were nearer to Highway 58 rather than 8 minutes south of 58.
The surrounding area did smell like sewage. Later, a Target employee later said it was a sewage issue in the area that is prevalent. In the room, there was no smell--just in the parking lot.
The part that made this stay really unforgivable was an experience in the breakfast area the next morning. The breakfast was still acceptable, considering the price of eggs had removed eggs from the buffet. But sitting in the breakfast area, there was, what seemed to be, a homeless person who had no shoes and was carrying around a hair dryer.
He was talking to a couple who was trying to be polite. But he was definitely disturbing the morning vibe of the breakfast area. He was loitering, not eating, and just taking advantage of the close proximity to others to have unwelcome conversations.
I was worried about bringing my young kids and wife to the area with someone unpredictable there, so I politely explained my dilemma to the hotel desk man. He said, "Don't worry! I'll keep an eye on him." My confidence was not strong. I didn't think if something sudden or unexpected happened, the desk man would be able to jump over a desk and intervene. So instead my daughter and I lugged a bunch of breakfast plates, coffee, juice all the way back to the room and we ate, hidden, in our room.
10 minutes later, as I was driving off to do a morning errand, I noticed said homeless person being chased by a young man. The homeless person was running for his life, jumped over a fence to the street--stumbling over a rock garden--and fell exhaustedly onto the sidewalk.
Although I feel for compassion for homeless people, I have to be clear, the reason I pay money for a place like the Country Inn, is to provide my family a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable stay. My first thought thought perhaps the office manager was just waiting for one of the enforcer employees to arrive and remove the loiterer. I thought--this was some strong action by the office staff... Well, the true story was not quite that.
Turns out that person who chased the homeless person away was a guest. He was the father of a tween who had gone to breakfast ahead of the family. The homeless person was talking to the tween boy and would not let it go. And the father, whom I later talked to in the parking lot, said it was wholly inappropriate. So he took action to send a message that the homeless person should not be bothering his young, vulnerable son.
I further learned from that guest: Apparently, the homeless person had been a guest in the hotel for 2 days or so and had been stealing sundries (sodas) and peeing in the pool. He had been causing some problems, including loitering in the breakfast area to the detriment of the morning breakfast guests.
Although I believe homeless people should have their dignity, all guests should be expected to behave to the terms of a hotel they are staying at. Loitering, stealing, urinating in public... those should have been handled promptly by the hotel staff. Perhaps this homeless person was staying off the streets with the help of a voucher or somehow. But long story short, as a customer with a family, I would never pay to put my family in a situation where I felt completely uncomfortable using the paid-for amenities or have to watch other guests take aggressive action where the hotel failed.
I have had previously good experiences with the Country Inn brand, but this really put me off to it. And, after providing feedback of this same sort to the after-stay email, I got a fairly generic, unconcerned reply. If you care about our business and families staying, please take the steps to show it to your customers in removing guests that violate hotel policies and also making it up to we guests who had a horrible experience due to your hotel choices.
